Despite the revocation of the AOC and the slim chance of revival, I pray and hope for the best outcome for all involved. Maintaining a positive outlook alone will not suffice to meet financial obligations. Therefore, my dedication to hard work and providing for my family serves as my driving force. As shown in the picture, I work 29 days a month from 0800 to 2200 hrs LT. Typically, E-Hailing drivers work five days a week with fewer hours. However, due to my commitments, previously supported by my salary, I must do what is necessary. #layanwithiman My daily routine consists of driving with a 30-minute break for Zohor, Asar and Maghrib prayers, respectively. Occasionally, I forego lunch to save time. Time is the most precious resource bestowed by Allah. Hence, it is crucial to manage it wisely. I am not sharing my experiences seeking pity. Rather, I aim to facilitate collective learning. What I endure is not overly burdensome. As there are others that face greater challenges. As an E-hailing driver, I encounter diverse individuals. Some sacrifice years away from their families to support them financially. Alhamdulillah, I am fortunate to spend time with my family daily, even though for a short period of time. To those who invited me for Raya, I hope you understand my reasons for declining. InshaAllah, if it is meant to be, I will join you next Raya. Amid the occasional bouts of road rage witnessed during my commutes, Ramadan generally brings out a greater sense of empathy, reminding us to be more considerate of others' circumstances and challenges. We foster a more inclusive and supportive team environment where colleagues are more attuned to each other's needs and can work together more effectively. Ramadan is always a time for self-reflection, it encourages you to assess your personal and spiritual growth. I'd advocate for making this reflection a regular practice, scrutinising our career trajectories, achievements, and sincerely assessing areas needed for improvement. Now that all of the performative posts about Ramadan have been posted... Do you really know how to support your Muslim employees or colleagues during (and beyond) Ramadan? Here's what they wish they didn't have to tell you: 1. Ramadan is an incredibly important time for Muslims. It's a time for reflection, prayer and family. Your employee's priorities during Ramadan are reflection, prayer and family. If you can be more flexible about how and where they work, please do so and respect their time and commitments outside of work. This time comes once a year and is incredibly important. 2. The Islamic calendar follows the phases of the moon, so yes, your Muslim colleague is being serious when they say they don't know when Ramadan will end. It's 29-30 days long and there will be a predicted date but it's subject to change. 3. There are so many reasons why someone is or isn't fasting. Please don't ask them about it - those reasons can be personal. They may be pregnant, nursing, on their period, going through an illness, etc. 4. Those fasting understand you are going to eat and drink as you normally would. You don't need to apologise for it but just be conscientious about it. Inviting them to a 'working lunch' is probably a bad choice - try to be considerate. 5. Even if they aren't eating on their lunch break, they should be encouraged to take time away from their desks and work. Fasting can be tiring - don't assume they're okay to work through their lunch because they won't be eating. 6. Having a place for them to pray (along with anyone else in your office) shouldn't be something you just arrange around Ramadan. A quiet place for reflection or prayer is important if you want to be inclusive all year round. 7. Eid is a special time of the year. Anticipate the fact that observant employees will want to take time off to celebrate with their loved ones. 8. Try to make a commitment to stop centring your company events and gatherings around alcohol not just during Ramadan, but throughout the year. There are plenty of drink options that are inclusive and fun beyond soda and water. If you're catering, organising a Halal meal is the least you can do and a quiet place to break fasts if they'll be attending in person. Most importantly, this Ramadan is going to feel different for many Muslims, regardless of where they are from, purely because of what is happening in Palestine. Please do not underestimate the impact of watching suffering, starvation and violence on such a large scale - it takes a massive toll. Their mental health may be in a difficult place. If you don't offer mental health care as an organisation and you know your team member may be struggling, you can connect with the team at Selfspace and find a solution that works for you. Eid (al-Fitr) is one of the two major Muslim holiday celebrations, where Muslims gather with friends, family, and community members. Eid al-Fitr (Arabic) translates to “festival of breaking the fast,” which is exactly as it sounds—it commemorates the end of the holy month of Ramadan. When is Eid? We are not sure, but we know it will be the day after the last day of Ramadan. This year, it will either fall on Tuesday, April 9th, or Wednesday, April 10th—depending on the moon sighting which will indicate if Ramadan is 29 or 30 days this year. For this reason, some might celebrate one day and others the second day. When will we know? As mentioned, we are all anticipating the announcement of the arrival of Eid depending on the moon sighting. Request? Your Muslim clients, colleagues, and employees will likely observe this holiday and request time off. Consider flexibility and understanding when they submit their time-off request as we are waiting to find out as well if it will be Tuesday, 4/9, or Wednesday, 4/10. Celebrate?
